As a storage manager with over 10 years of experience in the industry in Texas, I have noticed a few things on the shows that concern my about the how “REAL” the reality show is. In fact, because of one issue concerning “RED LOCKS” being cut off of units that caused me to doubt the “REALNESS” of the show. The reason I feel this way is because, as ALL storage managers know, RED LOCKS have keys that the manager uses, there is NO need to cut a red lock off of units. In fact red locks are used to overlock units that are deliquent and in lien, other wise known as “overlocking”. Also, if you notice, on some units, the units have been picked over and mostly junk is left in the units. You can tell when a unit has been picked over by the tenant and abondoned. So, why would a tenant pick what they wanted out of a unit and leave valuable items? The truth is, people wouldn’t do this! However, a full unit would more than likely have valuable items or at the very least can be resold for profit such as household items and tools. What upsets me is that the show gives unrealistic expectations to the views which in turn sparks interest in storage auctions. The truth is storage auctions are a gamble and true treasures are few and far between. I feel that the show is rigged to a point maybe not all of it but some of it is. Take a look at Storage Wars Texas! Those people are horrible actors. Are they even real business people? I have no idea!

In conclusion, as the saying goes, if it is too good to be true then it probably is. Even though, I believe that some of the shows are rigged I do believe that some of the units are actually real. They do have to keep interest, so use your own judgement. Who knows I may be wrong, but I am going with my gut on this one.

—“Climate-Control Storage” is mostly a marketing gimmick and a very Non-Green one at that (think of how much energy they are using cooling and heating all those storage units. It is a shame to spend all that energy cooling inanimate objects. The furniture is not going to complain about the heat—I assure you.) The fact is: in the far majority of cases, non-climate controlled storage works just fine. You may have heard of furniture sustaining damage in non-climate controlled storage, and that is invariably because WATER GOT INTO THE STORAGE UNIT! Especially when water got into the unit, and then SHRINK WRAP HELD THE WATER IN PLACE. This creates mildew and over time it is damaging to both upholstery and wood furniture. IF IT IS RAINING ON THE DAY FURNITURE IS PUT INTO STORAGE, THEN NO SHRINK WRAP SHOULD BE PUT DIRECTLY ON THE FURNITURE! The furniture can be padded first and then shrink wrap can be wrapped over the pads to hold them in place.

As more evidence against climate-controlled storage, think of this: When the sofa is made in the factory, is the factory climate-controlled? No. When the sofa is driven in the truck to “Havertys,” is the truck climate-controlled? No. When the sofa is stored in Haverty’s warehouse, is the warehouse climate-controlled? No. It is only when the sofa gets to Haverty’s showroom that it becomes climate-controlled. When it is sold it is then transported once again in a non-climate controlled truck.

It is true that the units in a climate-controlled building are down the hall away from the outside door, thus protecting against water entry. But it is also true that non-climate-controlled units at their door—slope up into the unit, thus preventing the inflow of water. And I can assure you, the warehouses of the major Van Lines—United, Mayflower etc. are not climate-controlled.

Wood furniture, upholstery: as long as there is no water present—stores fine in non-climate-controlled storage units. Mattresses and box springs also do fine as long as they are dry and have a pad or blanket to rest on, but I think it is worth it to put them into mattress boxes—they just stay clean that way, and off the concrete floor.

Now I wouldn’t store the “Mona Lisa” in non-climate controlled storage. Nor would I store the original US Constitution in non-climate controlled storage. Probably I also wouldn’t store a 16th Century French Sofa in non-climate controlled storage. Climate-controlled storage sometimes costs twice as much as regular storage. If a furniture piece or artwork belongs in an art museum, then go with the expensive climate-control. Otherwise save your money . . . and the electricity.

Well, if you answered yet to the title of this blog then I can help you!

***TIPS OF THE DAY*** Take an inventory of what you are storing and place it with your rental contract for your protection!
To start off make sure your unit is swept out, clean, and I suggest spraying a bug killer around the walls of the unit to keep bugs at bay.

The next step is to consult the storage manager or the person who is renting the storage unit to you on the best size to meet your needs. This is imporant because you want to be able access your things whithout having to move everything out to find something! WOW, for some people that would be on heck of a job! Another reason you want to make sure you are not having to cram your belonging in a unit is because you need to make sure that there is proper air flow between boxes, furniture and beds to help prevent mold.

I highly suggest that you leave room such as small isles so that you can access your belonging.

If you do not take the time to properly organize your new storage unit you will only be creating a large clutter of items that you will later have to clean up. Getting your storage unit started out in the right direction will save you a lot of time and energy in the future.

Start off by placing larger furniture items and appliances inside of the unit. Always make sure that none of the furniture or appliances are leaned against the wall of the building. Try to keep at least an inch of empty space around the walls of your unit. This will help the air circulate which will help keep your storage area fresh. When all of the furniture and large appliances are in the storage unit cover them carefully with blankets, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND not wrapping your furniture in plastic,a s plastic hold in moisture.

Remember that it is much less of a hassel if you try to use boxes that are mostly the same size because they are easier to stack. Be sure to labels the boxes as well.

Remeber the KEY to mazimizng the space in your unit is by planning how you will oraganize the unit. Stack boxes on furniture whenever possible to save space. Just don’t stack them too high because we don’t want you getting hurt now do we?

Lastly, if you do not have insurance, get it! Most storage facilities sell it at a low rate!

You may be moving to a new home or are moving to a new location where your husband will be assigned after his promotion at work. What this means then is you need to pack up your belongings and transport them to wherever you’re going to live. Sure it’s easy to say pack up and go but the process can be quite daunting.

The most important step that you need to do first is to determine which things you’re going to bring to your new residence. If there are stuff you no longer use including other junk items, make sure to dispose of them right away. You can either donate them to charity or do a garage sale.

Now if you are not sure about the space you’re going to have in your new home, you can decide to store some of your possessions in a self storage unit temporarily. In this way, you can still keep all of your valuables in a safe place at an affordable cost. Depending on the volume of items you need to store, there are different sizes of storage rental units available. You don’t have to rent two small units because you can choose the most appropriate size where your belongings can fit.

For packing purposes, you can use either cardboard boxes or plastic tubs with cover. Clean all your items first before putting them in the boxes.

If you have lots of books, make sure to place them flat inside the box and not in an upright position. For CDs, the best position is also flat in the box. A good tip before organizing them in your box is to place plastic underneath. This will prevent your cardboard box from absorbing moisture and eventually getting damaged.

Furniture of whatever size need to be covered with cloths or even your old bed sheets. Again, this will help prevent dust buildup moving forward.

Clothes, linens, curtains and other fabrics should be dry and clean before you pack them. If possible, woolen items have to be dry cleaned to prevent moth larvae hatching during storage. To store them in the boxes, you just need to fold them properly and classify them if you like. Separate the clothes from the linens and draperies and label them as well for easy identification.

Electrical appliances are very delicate so be sure to clean them properly before packing. The electrical circuits inside these devices are sensitive to dust, mildew and moisture so this is what you should avoid. If you’re very particular about these items and want them to be in their usable condition, you might want to consider storing them in a climate-controlled unit. In this way, moisture as well as changes in temperature can be prevented because a constant level of temperature is normally maintained in this type of storage unit.

As for your bicycles, lawn mowers and other tools, what you can do is to wipe them with machine oil first and then empty tanks before you store them away. This is to prevent corrosion of their parts. Also, gasoline and other flammable liquids are not usually allowed inside self storage so you have to remove them.

Full house moving is composed of one task after another that causes us much stress. Moving to a new home brings excitement and thrill yet it also gives us a lot of headaches due to all the tasks that need to be done. The only solution to this chore is to get it done and over with. Finish house moving at the soonest possible time by employing systematic and organized methods.

Here are some tips to follow in order to ensure a stress-free and hassle-free full house moving:

1. Get organized – Moving your house involves a lot of details. From packing to shipping, each step requires thinking, attention and implementation. Get organized by packing things from each room. This also makes unpacking easier as you know where to place things. A checklist is necessary to be systematic.
2. Set family members to motion – Do not embrace all the tasks by yourself. Get the help of family members in packing and labeling. If no family or friend is available to help, get hired help.
3. Pack expensive and breakable items with more care – PCs, antique collections and pieces of art need to be expertly wrapped and transferred.
4. Do not try to move everything – In most house moving experiences, we get to see a lot of useless junk that we no longer use or need. Dispose such items and do not bring them along.
5. Inform important people of your move – Inform bankers, relatives, schools, and your office about your change of address. Cancel local gym and association memberships.
6. Get valuable things insured for the move – Make sure that you have insurance for the most valuable items of your home.
7. Hire movers and shippers – Do not attempt to do the actual moving by yourself. Professional movers are needed and you can actually get very affordable deals without exposing yourself to too much stress.

These tips will surely help you in moving to your new home. These steps prevent unexpected hassles and stress. Most importantly, do not forget to enjoy and have fun in transferring to your new home!

Moving To A New House

An average person moves into a new house a number of times within their lifetime. Moving because of new job, need of more space or a change in scenery are some of the reasons for moving into a new house. This can be a very stressful activity to do but rewarding for most of the people. Whether you are moving a few floors down or across the country, moving into a new house is important and sometimes very hard to organize.

From gathering supplies like buying boxes and tape, to packing you’re house up, sorting a van lease deal, listing houses for sale on newspaper, and cleaning and moving into your new house. It is an adventure that almost everybody has his or her share of the story. A small and home office can be quite interesting to move, it may be a new area for local clients but can be a nightmare for the people that runs the business. So it is very important that you already planned and organized action plans to cover yourself during the move. Your small office maybe the last thing that you can fully packed, but you can begin by cleaning through your paperwork and make sure that you have storage for everything. If you are running a hobby or crafts business that takes a lot of space, you may want to start clearing and putting non-essential supplies in a box once you heard that you would be moving.

Careful planning is important when moving to a new house and you can use online resources to do that for you. You can also refer to some site that can be able to help you plan and organize your house moving. The important thing is to get organized a plan ahead once you know that you need to move to a new house, whether you are selling your house or you need more space to make room for a new baby. Moving to a new house can be stressful but an enjoyable activity to do.
